How to Pack Your Hiking Backpack Properly

The warm weather is here, and the trails are open for us to explore.

Whether you’re planning a short hike or a day in the mountains, packing your backpack properly is essential to enjoying your hike with peace of mind. Here’s what you shouldn’t forget to ensure a safe outing:

Food and drinks!

  • This is the basics: a good supply of water to stay hydrated throughout the day. Bring at least 1.5 liters if you’re hiking for more than 3 hours. Round out your supplies with energy bars, dried or fresh fruit, and nuts—these small snacks will help you keep up the pace!

First-aid supplies for minor injuries!

  • A basic first-aid kit: bandages, antiseptic, gauze pads. Don’t forget sunscreen—even on cloudy days, UV rays are still present!

Appropriate clothing!

  • Even if temperatures in the valleys are high, that’s not necessarily the case at higher elevations! It’s important to pack several layers of clothing to withstand the cool temperatures at the summits (a T-shirt, fleece, windbreaker, rain jacket, neck warmer, and gloves are essential). Don’t forget headwear to protect yourself from the elements (a beanie or cap).

To avoid getting lost:

  • On Isère Outdoor, you can download your base map and route for offline use, so you can always view your route—even in areas without cell service! You’ll also find a printable route guide for each hike.

Essential Items:

  • Tissues and some toilet paper. A trash bag to hold all your trash. A survival blanket in case of an emergency.

Comfort While Hiking:

  • Be sure to wear appropriate, well-broken-in hiking boots. Hiking poles can be useful. A small backpack (about 15 to 20 liters) to carry all your gear.

Before you go:

  • Check the weather and trail conditions. Let someone know your itinerary.
